The Failed banker
Ed, Marv, and Ritchie faced a bankrupt. Marv convinced one of the gunman to pay the parking fine for his trashy car. On the gunman’s way to the car, he dropped his gun. Ed used this time wisely by pointing that gun at the gunman’s eyes. He helped the police catch the gunman and put the gunman into the jail for six months. Ed became famous; then he received his first poker card/message.
The First Message
There are three addresses on the ace of diamonds. Ed went to the first address and saw the husband raping the wife and the daughter crying. Ed hesitated and didn’t save them after coming for several times. In the second case, he visited a lonely old lady, Milla. He read stories for her and visited her regularly later. In the third case, Ed watched a barefoot running girl, Sophie. Ed gave her confidence and told her how beautiful she was after the second competition. After the third case, Ed received a gun. Ed then knew what to deal with the first case. He used the gun to force the husband to leave the town and stop torturing the wife.
The Annual Sledge Game
Mark invited Ed to join the Annual Sledge Game even though Ed didn’t like the game. In the Chapter 3, Ed’s team won. In the game, Ed pushed Drew to the ground.
The Stones of Home
Daryl and Keith broke into Ed’s house to question him and deliver the second poker card. Ed didn’t know what to do with the second card until the hooker asked Ed to drive to the stones. There were three names on the stone indicating the people Ed should visit. First, Ed visited Father O’Reilly. Ed organized a free beer church party to attract more people to come to Father O’Reilly’s church. Secondly, Ed brought the Rose boys together by beating the little Rose. However, Ed got beaten by a group of people including the bigger Rose. Thirdly, Ed helped Angie by buying her an ice cream.
Trying Times for Ed Kennedy
For the third card, Ed searched for three book titles of three authors on the cards. The book titles are names of streets. On Glory Road, Ed pretended he was the former owner of the house to learn about the family living in that house. Ed had dinner with them, put on the Christmas light near the house and spent his Christmas night with the Tatupu. For the first few days on Clown Street, Ed and the Doorman walked to a restaurant and had some chips while observing. One stranger made Ed move to the second stage of this message. On the next evening, Ed had dinner in that restaurant and met his Ma. She was dating another man. Ed felt angry and sad and wanted to talk to her. He waited her on the front-porch in front of her house. Ma was surprised to see him and refused to talk to him. Ed pressured Ma to tell him the reason she hated him was his dad. On Bell Street, there was an old private theater. Ed was the first customer in weeks. After finishing the movie, the owner invited Ed to bring Audrey to this theater. They watched Coool Hand Luke together.
The Music of Hearts
On the fourth card, there were 3 movie titles.
Ed gave out Christmas cards to the people he helped for the first time. Ed, Marv, Ritchie and Audrey played card game together over night. Milla gave Ed a casual suit for Christmas present.
Ed then visited the theatre to learn more about the movies. He knew he had to help Ritchie, Marv and Audrey.
Ed went to Ritchie’s place and observed him a few nights. Daryl and Keith talked to Ed and told Ed that Ed knew what to do. Ed thought about this conversation for another day and understood he needed to encourage Ritchie to find a job to make his life meaningful. Next, Ed questioned Marv about the money. Marv told Ed that he spent the money for his child with Suzanne. Marv told Ed about the story between him and Suzanne. Ed brought Marv to Suzanne’s current address. Marv stood up to Mr. Boyd with Ed’s help. Later, Suzanne contacted Ed and asked to see Marv with their daughter. Marv was happy.
Ed waited outside Audrey’s house for 3 nights. Finally, Ed took Audrey out of her house and spent three minutes walking with music to make Audrey admit she loved Ed.
The Joker
A man brought an envelope to Ed’s house, telling him to get down to his father’s cemetery. In the cemetery, Ed met Daryl and Keith for the last time. A few more days later, a customer asked to go to Ed‘s place and other addresses of different case. The customer was the gunman. It was also the last time for Ed to see him. The gunman told Ed he went to jail to make Ed not a dead person. Inside Ed’s home was the messenger, a young man who killed Ed’s father. This man arranged all of the messages to help Ed become a better person than his father. Finally, the man asked Ed to keep living.
One afternoon, Audrey came and kissed Ed. Ed told Audrey everything about the messages.
